Study in Norway

Explore why Germany is a top destination for international students. With globally recognized degrees, practical internships, and rich cultural experiences, German universities offer unparalleled academic and career opportunities. Affordable education, cutting-edge research, and a vibrant student life make Germany the perfect choice for your study abroad journey.

Why Study in Germany?

German universities maintain extensive networks with institutions worldwide. Each year, thousands of students gain the opportunity to study abroad, experiencing new cultures and learning environments. German universities and technical colleges are equally committed to offering places and comprehensive support for international students. But what makes Germany so special, and what unique advantages does it offer students from around the world?

Unique Opportunities in Germany

Germany may be a relatively small country in size, but its historical significance and global role are remarkable. Beyond its influential position in Europe, Germany is a key player in international trade, politics, and economics. This prominence translates into valuable career opportunities for graduates. German-educated professionals are highly sought after globally and have realistic prospects for employment in international companies across various countries. Germany itself also offers an attractive environment for future employment.

These opportunities stem from the strength of the German educational system. Degrees from German universities are globally recognized, signifying a solid academic foundation and specialized expertise. Practical training is an integral part of German education, with many programs requiring internships. Professors strongly recommend these experiences, which are readily available in Germany’s vibrant industries and major cities. Internships span diverse disciplines, enriching students’ practical knowledge and professional networks.

Enriching Student Life

Germany offers diverse opportunities for travel and recreation. Depending on where you study, you can explore the country’s varied landscapes and attractions—from the North and Baltic Sea coasts to culturally rich towns and winter sports regions in the south. There is never a dull moment during studies in Germany.

The country’s central location also makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the rest of Europe. With careful planning, students can travel to multiple countries during their time abroad.

Academic Excellence and Structure

Germany’s higher education system underwent significant changes with the Bologna Process, introducing the Bachelor and Master degree structure. Students first earn a Bachelor’s degree and may continue with a specialized Master’s program. Both degrees are independent and widely respected.

A strong emphasis on research enhances Germany’s educational reputation. State-funded research projects allow students to engage in hands-on learning and gain practical experience. Although study programs in Germany are considered challenging compared to those in other countries, this rigor contributes to their esteemed global standing. Graduating from a German institution or completing a semester abroad here significantly enhances career prospects worldwide.

Education Costs in Germany

The cost of studying and living in Germany varies based on factors such as the level of study, the state where the institution is located, and whether it is public or private. Understanding these costs is crucial for planning your educational journey in Germany.

Universities often charge an administration fee for processing applications. The Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung application process is free.

When Do I Need to Submit the Application?

Application deadlines are usually several months before the semester starts. Ensure your application is complete and submitted on time. Early contact with the foreign students’ office is advised to allow time to gather missing documents.

To study at a German university, you need a “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” (university entrance qualification). If your secondary school certificate is insufficient, you must attend a “Studienkolleg” (foundation course) before enrolling.

Evaluation Steps:

  • Recognition of qualification
  • Subject-restricted admission
  • Additional study requirements

Recognition of Your Secondary School-Leaving Certificate

If your school-leaving certificate is recognized in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland, it is often accepted in Germany. Talented candidates for artistic subjects may be exempt from formal qualifications, needing to submit work samples or pass an aptitude test.

VISA AND RESIDENCE PERMIT: Applying for a Visa

As an international student, you may need an entry visa for Germany depending on where you come from and how long you plan to stay. For detailed information about visa requirements, contact the German embassy or consulate in your home country. You can find their addresses on the website of the German Federal Foreign Office.

VISA REQUIREMENTS

To enter Germany, you will most likely need a visa, which you should apply for at a German diplomatic mission in your home country before your trip. Exceptions exist for specific countries based on the duration and purpose of your stay.

Visit the German Federal Foreign Office website for up-to-date visa requirements. The German embassy or consulate in your home country can provide comprehensive details and address all visa application matters. You can find the contact information for all German diplomatic missions on this site.

Entry Requirements:
For pre-Master’s courses, typical entry requirements include at least three years of higher education and a UK IELTS score of 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in all skills).

If you do not meet the English language entry level but possess a UKVI IELTS score of at least 4.5 (minimum 4.0 in all skills), you can enroll in a course that includes Extended English and Skills (EES).

THE CORRECT VISA

The type of visa you need depends on whether you have received your notification of admission from a German university. Do not enter the country as a tourist—a tourist visa cannot be converted into a student or student applicant visa.

There are two main types of student visas:

  1. Student Applicant Visa (“Visum zur Studienbewerbung”)
Apply for this visa if you have not yet received your admission notification from a university or foundation course.
    • Duration: Initially valid for three months, extendable up to six months.
    • Purpose: Allows you to meet university admission requirements.
    • Next Steps: If you gain admission within this period, you can apply for a student visa.
  2. Student Visa (“Visum zu Studienzwecken”)
Apply for this visa if you have received your notification of admission to a university or foundation course.
    • Duration: Typically valid for three months.
    • Next Steps: Within these three months, you must apply for an extended residence permit at the Alien Registration Office in your university town.

Job Opportunities?

Germany is a major industrial power. It is one of the world’s biggest and most technologically advanced producers of machinery, vehicles, and chemicals. All of this is supported by a highly skilled workforce. Still, there are plenty of opportunities.

The German law states that international students are allowed to work part-time for up to 20 hours a week or 120 full days of a year. More than 60% of current international students work part-time while studying in Germany.
